George V 5 Cents 1921 AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Ottawa mint, KM22a. A widely recognized series rarity that saw an original total mintage of over 2.5 million. After legislation was passed to create a new 5 Cents piece of a copper and nickel composition, orders were issued to melt the older 5 Cents silver coins, with more than 3 million pieces melted, including nearly the entire 1921 mintage. Those that escaped the melting pot included many that entered circulation. This representative remains on the higher end for the issue, having seen only minimal trade, and is well-struck, with wear confined to only the higher points of the design, the surfaces lightly retoned since a past cleaning.
