The watch, a beautiful square 18k gold Audemars Piguet wrist watch retailed by Cartier was the wedding present given by Gloria Vanderbilt, the famous artist, author, fashion designer, heiress and socialite to her future husband and one of Hollywood's greatest ever film directors Sidney Lumet. Vanderbilt had the watch engraved on the case back with the inscription 'For a Long Long Time'. They were married on the 28th Augusts 1956 in New York after a whirlwind romance, with the marriage ending in 1963.
Lumet, born in Philadelphia to Polish Jewish actor parents started as an actor, before directing first on stage, and then on film. His directorial career spanned form 1951 through 2007. At the age of 26 and on the recommendation of his friend Henry Fonda, he adapted and directed '12 Angry Men' to receive his first Oscar nomination, before going on to direct films as diverse as Dog Day Afternoon, Network, Serpico and Murder on the Orient Express to name just a few. Nominated for an Oscar 5 times, He was awarded the Honoree Oscar in 2005 and was subsequently voted one of the greatest directors of the 20th Century. Seen here wearing the watch alongside his two daughters Jenny and Amy from a later marriage to author Gail Buckley, Lena Horne's only daughter.
Born in New York City in 1924 to the affluent and influential railroad and shipping scion Reginald Vanderbilt, Gloria Vanderbilt became famous as she ventured into theater, writing, film, and fashion, with her jeans becoming a staple of the '70s designer scene. An NYC institution, and rumored to be the inspiration for Holly Golightly in Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's Vanderbilt was married 4 times (Lumet was her third husband), and is the mother, to amongst others, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
