Wilt Chamberlain in San Diego

Four-time MVP. Two-time champion. Thirteen-time All-Star. The only man to score 100 points in an NBA game. After the 1972–73 season, Wilt Chamberlain left the Lakers to join the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadors as player-coach. A contract dispute with Los Angeles kept him off the floor, and he spent 1973–74 leading the team from the bench.
Garments from that brief chapter almost never surface. Here are three, each described by MEARS as team-issued: his gold No. 13 jersey, graded MEARS A10 — the highest grade on the MEARS scale — with his “WILT” nameplate warm-up jacket and his shorts, each graded MEARS Authentic. MEARS photo-style matched the jacket and shorts to period images.
Provenance. The collection comes from the family of Ruth Ackerman, whose aunt Elaine Hutton was related to Sy Goldberg, Chamberlain’s longtime agent (pictured centre, with Muhammad Ali and Wilt Chamberlain). The family’s provenance file includes a photograph of a poem Chamberlain wrote to Goldberg, and each piece comes with its MEARS letter.
Icons of the Game
Jordan at his most electric, two cards of the fiercest competitor baseball ever saw, and the quarterback with seven rings.

Gridiron, Pitch & Ring
Eight Cowboys Hall of Famers on one helmet, boots signed by the two greatest of their generation, and gloves signed by Rocky himself.

The Great Ones
The most important hockey card ever printed, a stick Gretzky used and signed, rookies of Orr, Crosby and Matthews, and a signed McDavid first-goal display.

The Founding Era

Original shareholders’ ledger, 1927–1933, 212 pages
In 1927 Conn Smythe took control of the Toronto St. Patricks and renamed them the Maple Leafs. This ledger records who owned the club in the years that followed — share certificates, transfers and balances in original handwritten and typed entries, through the opening of Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931. Names include Conn Smythe, J.P. Bickell, Frank Selke and Charlie Conacher. It comes with its original archival envelope and a signed letter of provenance.
